Music Videos Styles

Technical codes
- As with your work on TV Drama, when analysing pop video it is important to consider the technical codes which are used to construct both the video itself and the representations inherent within it.

Camerawork
- As with any moving image text, how the camera is used and how images are sequenced will have a significant impact upon meaning.

The Close Up Predominates
- As in most TV, this is partly because of the size of the screen.

- Also because of the desire to create a sense of intimacy for the viewer.

- It also emphasises half of the commodity on sale (not just the song, but the artist, and particularly the voice).

Listening & Choosing Songs

In lessons when we first got the 18 songs and listened to them for the time we only liked 5 songs particularly from the 18 songs and they were track number '#3 - Is He Really Coming Home', '#4 - Home', '#5 - Brand New Day', '#6 - Just Because' and '#7 - Lost'.

We decided that we were going to choose one from the 5 songs we liked and we narrowed it down to tracks that we thought we could make a good music video for because of the lyrics of the songs and they were the tracks #3, #4 and #5.

In the end we decided to choose track '#5 - Brand New Day' because we like the lyrics, the song and we believed we can make a good music video with this song.

Goodwin’s Music Video Analysis

Andrew Goodwin writing in ‘Dancing in the Distraction Factory’ (Routledge 1992)

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
(e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Tinie Tempah - Written In The Stars ft. Eric Turner

How and to what extent does your chosen music video fulfil the main purposes of a music video?

Tinie Tempah - Written In The Stars ft. Eric Turner

This music video really sells the song by creating a video that really shows what this song is all about, as the song refers mainly to someone who is rejected from the world but has a mission, a destiny which is "written in the stars" and this music video demonstrates this perfectly by showing the viewers exactly that.

This music video does have narrative scenes in it to help show the meaning of the song and because of this it does allow the listener a better understanding of the song due to the fact it engages the viewers more to the story behind the song. This makes the viewers really try to listen more carefully to the lyrics of the song so they can understand what the lyrics actually mean mainly in the narrative scenes.

This music video is entertaining especially because of the acting involved in the video. The acting is done really well in the video and this helps demonstrate what the song is all about. All the acting scenes involved in this video really does grab the viewers attention because of the fact this song has such a powerful meaning which gets portrayed really well in the video it therefore grabs the viewers attention. This entertains the viewers because of the way the video hooks them into watching it and seeing what happens next.

This music video definitely creates a memorable visual mainly because of the narrative scenes inside the video due to it showing the meaning of the song and what its really about. It leaves the viewers amazed at how well the song was demonstrated in the video leading them to buy the CD of the artist because of the fact the song has a powerful meaning which they may like or prefer to have and it was with the help of the video by showing the meaning of the song in the video.

This music video has become very popular over the years due to the song having a strong meaning to it and this makes the artist become more popular because of the fact the video has become very popular. It gives the artists more popularity than other artists which gives him a better status and therefore giving his songs more value. This helps the ratings of his songs to rise and for him to grow as a artist.

Kid British - Our House

The audience know that they are watching a music video and not a short film due to fact that there is so many cuts used in between the shots such as jump cuts and the way the shots only last a few seconds before moving on to another shot. By this I mean when there is someone in the shot you only see him in that shot for a couple of seconds and then the camera cuts into another shot where you see someone else, for example near the beginning you can see one of the lead artists in the middle of the shot and then couple of seconds later you see a the kid in the shot running about around him. From this I noticed that the video uses fast cuts which makes the video seem a lot more hectic as you can see people in the video dancing and moving about a lot which suggests that they're listening to a song or that there is a rhythm in the background. The camera shots used in the video are mainly mid shots and close ups and they are used when the artists are facing the camera singing or rapping which clearly shows that this is a music video as each artist are looking straight into the camera when they are singing or rapping their verse in the song. This illustrates that this is a music video because of the way the artists are looking directly at a camera moving their mouths and using their body language such as their hand movements when they are rapping and this is done in music videos, not short films.
The image I think is being sold is young teenagers acting like how they are stereotypically represented. Such as you see a lot shots of the artists jumping over fences and are in back gardens of people's houses in that area and this signifies that young teenagers are mischievous and care free as they are doing what they want. Also, the artists appearances are very trendy as they have fresh new trainers and have a bit of swag about them which shows that they look more different then people in their area who look average while the teenagers stand out. The whole neighbourhood looks quite run down as you can see beer cans on the floor on peoples gardens and you even see a sheep who are normally in farms which are dirty and gritty. But the fact that you see the artists who are young teenagers in their area who are having a good time shows that they selling a image to the audience of the youth being active, care free, energetic and even friendly as they are saying 'hellos' to their neighbours with smiles. You can see that video is not depressing but quite lively due to the way the artists interpret their lyrics and act it out. Furthermore, as you can see the artists jumping over fences and running about illustrates that they are upbeat which shows that their song is upbeat as well due to the way the artists act.
